Facts:
Mrs. Melycent Comfort Waiters, a Nigerian woman, married U.S. citizen Mr. Micheal Waiters on December 17, 2012, but their marriage quickly became strained due to frequent conflicts, leading to separation. The Life Camp Police Station in Abuja intervened, arranging reconciliatory meetings between the couple and their lawyers, including Mr. Waiters’ attorney, Mr. Darlington Ozurumba.
On April 26, 2013, Mrs. Waiters claimed to have suffered neck and hip injuries, which led to hospitalization. She reported the incident to the police but alleged that the respondent (Mr. Waiters’ lawyer) and his associates had taken her late husband’s belongings before the police arrived. She further accused the respondent and his associates of threatening her, stating her late husband paid N400,000 to ensure she did not return to her matrimonial home.
In defense, Mr. Ozurumba claimed that Mrs. Waiters had misled his late client about being pregnant, later admitting she wasn’t and had an abortion. This allegedly led to verbal, physical, and mental abuse by Mrs. Waiters, and accusations of theft. He also accused her of using the police to extort money from Mr. Waiters. Mr. Ozurumba recounted an incident on April 26, 2013, where Mrs. Waiters allegedly showed up at Mr. Waiters’ house with police officers, demanding access despite her violent behavior.
